‘Hopefully that’s good news’: Arteta reveals boost for Arsenal in pursuit of Saka replacement

Mikel Arteta has revealed the Gunners have been handed a boost over the fitness of one of the wingers who can fill the void left by the injured Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal’s win at Crystal Palace last weekend was overshadowed by the news that Bukayo Saka had suffered an injury which would keep him on the sidelines for quite some time.

It has since been confirmed that the England international will not be back in action for several weeks at least, meaning the Gunners will have to endure a busy fixture list in January and perhaps February without the club’s top performer so far this season.

At the time of Saka’s injury blow, his immediate replacement on the right wing, Raheem Sterling, was deemed to have succumbed to a knee injury which was supposed to sideline him for a lengthy period as well.

However, speaking after the 1-0 win over Ipswich Town on Friday, Mikel Arteta confirmed the Gunners had received some good news on the recovery of Sterling, with the Chelsea loanee now on course to be back earlier than expected.

According to the Arsenal boss, Sterling’s knee injury is not as bad as it initially appeared and the ex-Manchester City forward could be available for the Gunners soon.

“Yes, the news with Raz [Sterling] I think is better,” Arteta said after Friday night’s game

“We probably expected the knee injury to take longer than it has evolved in the last few days. Hopefully that’s good news because we need him.”

Without Sterling to call upon, the main option for the right wing role has been Gabriel Martinelli, who produced a fairly rough display in that position against Ipswich on Friday.
