One such player to be credited with a move to Liverpool is Matheus Cunha. The Wolves forward has been in fine form this season for the Molineux outfit, scoring 10 goals in the Premier League and earned a place in Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville's team of the season so far on Sky Sports.
TBR Football reported that Liverpool are among a host of clubs showing an interest in signing Cunha, who completed a £44million move to Wolves in January 2023. The Reds will reportedly face competition from Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle and Manchester City for Cunha's signature in January or next summer.
It should not be a surprise to see Liverpool linked with signing Cunha, and if the interest turns out to be genuine it would be even less a surprise. The Reds already have a history with signing the best player in the Wolves squad, having brought Diogo Jota from Molineux to Anfield more than four years ago in a deal worth up to £45million.
Cunha has shown himself to be more than capable in front of goal. Whether it be extraordinary efforts like scoring direct from a corner against Man United on Boxing Day, or the dramatic last-minute equaliser against Brighton back in October - Cunha has proven on multiple occasions he can seize the moment when it's needed.
The 25-year-old already has experience playing for some of Europe's most successful clubs, with spells at Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig before moving to Wolves. Now that Cunha has Premier League experience under his belt and is starting to show consistent quality in front of goal, it's no wonder links of a move away from Molineux are starting to emerge.
One problem Liverpool may have when it comes to signing Cunha, though, is where he would actually play. For Wolves, he has been used either on the left wing or in an advanced midfield role behind the centre forward.
Liverpool are already blessed with six forward options in Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa, as well as the aforementioned Jota. It's unlikely that the Reds would sign another forward without one departing, unless Arne Slot had plans to use Cunha in a midfield role rather than in the final third.
With Salah's contract uncertainty and the possibility of an Anfield exit next summer, the signing of a new forward to replace the Egyptian cannot be ruled out at this stage. Were Salah to sign a new deal in the weeks or months ahead, though, that would changes things.
For the time being, Cunha is a player that Liverpool would be wise to keep on their radar. But unless something dramatic happens with a player leaving in January or an emotional departure occurs at the end of the season on a free transfer, the likelihood of Cunha moving to Anfield at this stage seems early, to say the least.
