Report: What Trent Alexander-Arnold did when asked to clarify his goal celebration against West Ham

Trent Alexander-Arnold must have known that he would get people talking after scoring for Liverpool against West Ham on Sunday.

Few players had been in the news quite as much as the Reds vice-captain in the days leading up to the match.

The suggestions that Alexander-Arnold is likely to join Real Madrid at the end of the season had started to become almost deafening.

As a result, it was not too difficult to decipher his goal celebration after hitting home a deflected effort against the Hammers.

Raising a hand to his ear, Alexander-Arnold mimicked a chattering motion, suggesting he is very much aware of all the babble surrounding his Liverpool future.

Inevitably, Trent was asked to comment on what he meant by the gesture following the game.

Trent Alexander-Arnold asked to explain celebration
Alexander-Arnold’s celebration was clearly in reference to the chatter about where he’ll be playing next year. In our opinion, it was an unnecessary one.

The move only makes sense if Trent ignores Real Madrid and decides to stay at Anfield. If he does the opposite, it serves only as a great big slap in the face of the Liverpool supporters.

Besides, the talk is still that Alexander-Arnold is yet to decide his future. So, to make this gesture when he still hasn’t made the definitive call himself just seems a little silly.

Perhaps if the Liverpool academy graduate came out to explain himself clearly, we would change that opinion.

But according to the Liverpool ECHO, Alexander-Arnold chose to do no such thing when given the opportunity in the mixed zone after the West Ham game.

Instead, they claim that when Trent walked through and was asked to give his take on the celebration, the 26-year-old simply gave a ‘wry smile’ and carried on walking.

Alexander-Arnold has to make decision in January
Some Liverpool fans will likely have taken Trent’s gesture to mean that they should ignore the talk from the Spanish press and that he is keen to stay at Anfield.

But that does not really appear to be the case here.

Whatever Alexander-Arnold did or did not mean by it, though, he really has to make a decision over the coming month.

Liverpool cannot go into the latter part of the campaign with such uncertainty over whether their vice captain is staying.

If Trent respects the club that raised him at all, he would stop toying around and give them a clear decision over what he’s about to do. No more nonsense.
