Virgil van Dijk addresses future as Liverpool contract talks drag on

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk has echoed the sentiments of all Reds fans. The team's captain has been in exceptional form during the first half of the season under Arne Slot's management.

Liverpool, who are set to face Leicester City at Anfield on Thursday night, are currently leading both the Premier League and their Champions League group stage. They've also reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, a trophy they clinched last season under Jurgen Klopp.

Since taking over from Klopp, Slot has guided Liverpool to 21 victories in 25 matches across all competitions. His smooth transition into Merseyside life has sparked hopes that his inaugural season could end with silverware.

Central to this success is Van Dijk, whose performances have reinforced his reputation as one of the world's top centre-backs.

However, in less than a week, the 33-year-old will be free to discuss a potential transfer with foreign clubs next summer as he, vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, and top scorer Mohamed Salah approach the final six months of their contracts with Liverpool.

It's understood that the club has offered new terms to these key players, but as 2024 draws to a close, talks between the players' agents and sporting director Richard Hughes are ongoing.

Ahead of Leicester's trip to Anfield, Van Dijk has lovingly spoken about his bond with Liverpool, suggesting a mutual adoration between him, the club, and the supporters. In his Amazon Prime interview, the Dutch skipper detailed: "I love the club, the club loves me. I love the fans, the fans love me and it is a very good foundation to be successful."

Optimistic about his playing future, he added, "In my opinion I can play for another three, four years at least at the highest level. We will see what the future brings."
