David Ornstein makes Arsenal transfer claim as vice-president confirms bid

Arsenal now turn their attention to a Champions League date with Girona after picking up an important three points over the weekend. The Gunners defeated Wolves away from home despite losing a man to a sending off, though the Midlands club also got a man sent off later in the game.

Mikel Arteta needs a new attacking signing before next Monday’s transfer deadline, but Arsenal are struggling to get a deal done. Here we round up all the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding the Emirates Stadium.

Ornstein on Arsenal’s signing chances
David Ornstein says Arsenal are still likely to get a deal done before the end of the transfer window despite reaching this point having made little progress. “I think they will do something,” Ornstein told NBC Sports. “Don’t know for sure, but that’s my sense because work is ongoing inside the club to explore their various options to bring in somebody that Mikel Arteta feels is the ‘right one’.

“Many people will be watching this saying ‘give us some names, give us some names’. Well, right now I don’t know who Arsenal are going to bring in, in this window. We’ll have to watch this space on a striker.”

Donmezer chase
Arsenal are said to be interested in signing young talent Deniz Dönmezer from Adana Demirspor. The 16-year-old goalkeeper is already playing regular football, and the Gunners are said to be circling.

The club’s vice-president Metin Korkmaz told Milliyet via Sport Witness: “All the big clubs in the Super Lig are interested in his transfer. We talked to Galatasaray about Deniz. They are keen on this transfer, they have a priority in the transfer, after which they can make a bid for Deniz and Maestro. Arsenal have sent an official offer. They offered €3m. According to this offer, they will pay the money, but Deniz will play with us on loan for a year and a half. Then he will join Arsenal.

“Fenerbahce, on the other hand, offered €3m for Maestro and Deniz. They also said, ‘Let Deniz play on loan for one and a half years and then come to us’. Unfortunately, we had to reject the offer of both clubs. We will never give Deniz for the proposed figures.”

Red card verdict
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has issued his verdict on Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card. He told Sky Sports: "I think it is breaking up a promising attack. That's my opinion and other referees see it differently. Lewis-Skelly realises Doherty is away and his priority is to stop him quickly, and he flicks out.

“It's a very cynical foul but not a red card. It's not the worst decision in the world like people say. Referee Michael Oliver feels, and still feels, that he goes down his Achilles. If that's what he thinks, referees are told now that a tackle with studs down the Achilles has to be a red card. I don't think he does. It happens very quickly. But for me, I think it is a yellow card for stopping a promising attack. Is the challenge with brutality? Is it with malice? Is it gaining intensity and speed? I think not."
