Just before half time at Molineux, Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly tripped Matt Doherty as he broke from a Gunners corner just outside the Wolves box.
Referee Michael Oliver showed Lewis-Skelly a straight red card, much to the dismay of the Arsenal players, bench and fans.
TalkSPORT pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur man Jamie O’Hara took to social media to make his feelings clear on the matter.
Jamie O’Hara says Myles Lewis-Skelly sending-off is ‘never ever a red card’
O’Hara was on Arsenal and Lewis-Skelly’s side of the debate, claiming on X that it was “never ever a red card”.
Indeed, the former Spurs midfielder admitted that, while he’s all for Arsenal having a bad time, he thinks it was one of the worst refereeing decisions he has ever seen.
When questioned about his opinion by a fan, O’Hara explained how such fouls are commonplace, but they would normally be bookings rather than straight red cards.
O’Hara continued by saying he’d have understood had it been closer to the Arsenal goal or even near the halfway line, but not just outside the Gunners box.
Wolves ended up getting a man sent off later on in the game, Joao Gomes being shown a second yellow after a dangerous challenge on Jurrien Timber.
Arsenal then took the lead in the 74th minute when Riccardo Calafiori swept home after Nelson Semedo failed to deal with Gabriel Martinelli’s cross.
Calafiori’s goal proved to be the winner as the Gunners held on for a 1-0 win in the West Midlands.
What Mike Dean said about Lewis-Skelly red card
The official line by the Premier League Match Centre is that Oliver’s decision to send Lewis-Skelly off was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed it serious foul play.
Former referee Mike Dean agreed with the PLMC’s opinion, telling Sky Sports News that he can understand Oliver’s decision after seeing a still image of the incident.
“I’ve got a still image,” he said. “If you see it, you can see why the referee has decided what he’s done. He’s put his studs down the inside of his leg.
“Now I’ve seen the other image, you can see why he’s been sent off.”
However, pundit Chris Sutton disagreed with the decision, calling it a “shocker” borne of “total incompetence”.
