Mikel Arteta handed double Arsenal injury boost ahead of Champions League clash with Girona

Mikel Arteta has been handed a huge Arsenal fitness boost ahead of the Gunners' Champions League clash against Girona on Wednesday.

The north Londoners travel to Spain knowing they have virtually already qualified for the last-16, thus avoiding the knockout phase play-offs. Arsenal are currently third in the league and a win against Girona could see the Gunners leapfrog Barcelona, should the Catalan side lose against Atalanta.

Ahead of Wednesday's clash, the Arsenal squad have been put through their paces at the Sobha Realty Training Centre for one final time, before they jet off to Spain. One of the players who took part in the session was Martin Odegaard, who missed the weekend's Premier League win at Wolves through illness.

Mikel Merino, who also missed the trip to Wolves after picking up a minor knock in training last week, trained as normal, too, which means Mikel Arteta has been given a huge double injury boost for the midweek trip to Girona. It also bodes well for the weekend, when the Gunners welcome Man City to Emirates Stadium.

Elsewhere, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu remain Arsenal's long term absentees. Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was controversially sent off against Wolves, trained with the squad and is expected to be among the travelling party.
