The Gunners have been strongly linked with a move for Newcastle United's Alexander Isak, with Mikel Arteta known to be a big admirer of the in-form forward. However, while they are not expected to be able to afford the astronomical fee it would take for the Magpies to even consider a bid for Isak, Arteta has confirmed that the club would be looking to spend in the coming weeks.
Jesus was stretchered off in their FA Cup third-round clash with Manchester United on Sunday, with Arsenal now confirming that their worst fears have been realised. The Brazilian has undergone tests, and the news does not appear good for the former Manchester City forward, who could now miss the rest of the campaign.
It has instantly prompted renewed speculation over Arsenal's interest in Isak, who has already scored twice against the Gunners this season, in the 1-0 Premier League win for Eddie Howe's men in November, and last week's 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg success at the Emirates.
However, United have no intention of selling the 15-goal striker, who is set to return to the starting line up when they face Wolves at the St James' Park on Wednesday, having sat out the 3-1 FA Cup win over Bromley.
Speaking on Gabriel Jesus' injury, Arteta said today: "We know more now and it's not looking good at all. We need to review with one more specialist and should know more this afternoon. I don't want to confirm anything until we have a final doctor report, but we were very worried after the game and we are very worried now."
And when asked if that will impact the club's transfer strategy for the January window, he added: "My answer doesn't change, my answer remains the same. We are actively looking at the market to improve the squad. We have been doing that since day one. We would be naive to not do that, because it's an opportunity to evolve and improve the squad. Especially with the circumstances that we have we are looking and we are trying and let's see what we are able to do."
