Ollie Watkins makes Arsenal transfer ambition clear as Gunners launch shock bid

Arsenal could convince Ollie Watkins to become a Gunner because he is a boyhood fan - and he has previously hinted about a dream move to the club.

The North London side have been linked with a sensational late move to sign the Aston Villa frontman. Mikel Arteta’s side have long been considering a move for a forward as they attempt to cope with Gabriel Jesus’ long-term knee injury.

A number of forwards have been linked including Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and most recently Mathys Tel. But it appears that Arsenal have settled on the man they want to sign.

Arsenal have lodged a £60million bid for Villa frontman Watkins but have already seen their attempts rebuffed. A fresh approach from Arsenal over the final days of the transfer window has not been ruled out.

And if that happens, Watkins might want to pursue a potential switch. The 29-year-old has admitted on a number of occasions in the past that he is a supporter of the North Londoners, and expressed a wish to one day represent them.

Speaking to the Sports Gazette at the 2020 London Football Awards, Watkins said: “That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a long shot."

Meanwhile, Watkins revealed that a host of family members also offer their support to the Gunners. Speaking after scoring twice against Arsenal in 2020, he said: “I’m not sure my grandad or uncle Baz are going to be too happy!

“They are Arsenal fans and I am an Arsenal fan myself - but I’m buzzing. I am sure they will love it really. I am over the moon.”

Meanwhile, Watkins has never hidden his admiration for Arsenal icon Thierry Henry. Speaking about the Frenchman, he said: “I always say it now, the best player to play in the Premier League. I think he was a joy to watch.

“Back then, when I was younger, I used to find games a little bit boring, I couldn’t sit still and watch. But whenever Thierry had the ball I always was excited and thought he was going to create something.”

Watkins, 29, joined Villa from Brentford back in 2020. He has gone on to score 80 goals in 200 appearances - ten of which have come this season. The striker, who has 18 England caps to his name, has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.
