Premier League announcement could see Arsenal and Liverpool's roles reversed in title race

The Premier League have confirmed Liverpool's clash against Aston Villa will be rescheduled for February 19 should they reach the Carabao Cup final - which could have huge ramifications for the title race.
The Reds already have a game in hand after their Merseyside Derby against Everton was postponed until February 12. And Arne Slot's side will get another one after that should they see off Tottenham in the second leg of their semi-final cup clash at Anfield.

Arsenal are also in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup but find themselves 2-0 down to Newcastle after the first leg. Should they go out and Liverpool make the final, it will be the Gunners who have a game in hand.

That's because Arsenal have already learned that their clash against Chelsea has been postponed due to the Blues reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

In this scenario, Mikel Arteta's men would play a month with a game in hand over Liverpool, which would ramp up the pressure on Liverpool - who currently have a six-point lead over their rivals.

Should Liverpool drop more points in the title race in the coming games and Arsenal continue putting the pressure, their rescheduled game against Chelsea on March 16 will be seen as integral for their hopes of becoming Premier League champions for the first time since 2004.

However, if Arsenal were to claw back their 2-0 deficit against Newcastle and reach the Carabao Cup final themselves, they'd lose this potential advantage as they'd then play the Blues on February 18.

There's certainly the possibility of Liverpool dropping points in the coming games. They face a tricky visit to in-form Bournemouth on Saturday before their testing cup clash against Spurs next week. They then have their derby clash against Everton before games against Man City and Newcastle at the end of February.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have winnable fixtures against Leicester and West Ham coming up in February, before a tough period that sees them lock horns with Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and finally Chelsea.

First, though, the Gunners take on rivals Manchester City and Arteta believes victory could be a catalyst in their title bid. He said: "It would be a big boost for us. Winning big matches is always something special.

"Every time we play a big match against our big rivals, it brings something extra. It's the confidence, it's the emotion, it's the fact that you are there and you continue to win. That's what we want to achieve."
