‘The feeling is’: £50m player is starting to regret not signing for Liverpool last summer – journalist

Liverpool were largely inactive in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, the Reds only made two signings in the summer, with Giorgi Mamardashvili heading back to Valencia on loan immediately, while Federico Chiesa has barely played for Liverpool since arriving in the summer.

However, it wasn’t for a lack of trying for Liverpool in the summer.

Indeed, Liverpool tried to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window, but Zubimendi decided to stay at Real Sociedad and remain loyal to his boyhood club.

Now, six months on, Zubimendi is being linked to Liverpool again, and according to Ben Jacobs, speaking on The Done Deal Show, Zubimendi is now starting to regret not signing for Liverpool.

Martin Zubimendi has Liverpool regret
According to Jacobs, Zubimendi is starting to regret his decision over the summer.

The journalist says that the Spaniard is feeling that he missed a trick not leaving Sociedad in the summer, and he’s planning an exit this year, bet that in January or in the summer.

“After not getting Zubimendi in the summer Liverpool didn’t go and get another number six. So we’re in a situation in January where if Zubimendi changed his mind in January or in the summer I would expect both Man City and Liverpool to be in that conversation,” Jacobs said.

“What’s kind of odd with the Zubimendi situation is that there was a real optimism from Liverpool initially, but that very quickly turned to pessimism and the player was under pressure to stay at Sociedad.

“The oddity is that not that much time has passed since he decided to stay at Sociedad, and yet now the feeling is that maybe he’s starting to regret that decision and plan for a 2025 exit.”

Martin Zubimendi compared to Ryan Gravenberch
Zubimendi regrets not signing for Liverpool in the summer, but Liverpool may not be regretting missing out on this signing.

Indeed, while Zubimendi would’ve slotted in well as Liverpool’s number six, Ryan Gravenberch has been reborn in that position this season.

Gravenberch has been compared to Patrick Vieira after his incredible performances this term, and the stats show that Gravenberch has been just as good as Zubimendi this season.

Ryan Gravenberch this season Martin Zubimendi this season
Pass success rate 89.9% 84.4%
Key passes per game 0.8 0.7
Interceptions per game 1.9 1.4
Tackles per game 1.8 2.5
Dribbles per game 1 0.8
Zubimendi’s stats are still incredible, and, in some areas, he is outperforming Gravenberch still.

However, Gravenberch is performing just as well as Zubimendi, and Liverpool can be pleased with how their midfield is working this season.

Zubimendi would’ve been a great signing for Liverpool, but the Reds’ midfield has functioned brilliantly this term even without the £50m man in the mix.

Who knows? Now that Zubimendi’s stance has changed, perhaps Liverpool could revisit this deal in the coming weeks.
