Trent Alexander-Arnold makes two Liverpool demands to reject Real Madrid transfer

Trent Alexander-Arnold has demanded a long-term contract and a committment to make him Liverpool captain if he is to stay at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold's current deal will expire at the end of the season and he is now free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with an overseas side. Liverpool rejected a £20million bid from Real Madrid to sign him immediately on New Year's Eve.

Madrid still appear to be the frontrunners to secure the Englishman's services from next season. But it appears he is still giving Liverpool chiefs the chance to keep hold of him for the long-term.

The right-back has been with the Reds since he was a child, working his way up through the club's academy. And he has not given up hope of extending his stay on Merseyside, though Liverpool will have to agree to two key demands.

According to talkSPORT, Alexander-Arnold has made it clear to Reds chiefs that they must offer at least a three-year contract for him to stay. They will also have to commit to making him captain in the 'long run'.

The Reds' current skipper Virgil van Dijk is also out of contract in the summer. It is unknown how Alexander-Arnold's second demand may affect the Dutchman's own negotiations over a new contract.

Van Dijk is 33 years old though, with means Alexander-Arnold's wish could come true even if the skipper stays. The right-back's future is described as being 'open', with a belief that Van Dijk is more likely than not to stay.

He will likely be offered a bumper contract by Madrid, who are expected to double his wages to around £400,000 per week. Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti has been keen to avoid jeopardizing a potential move by speaking publicly about it.

“January signings? It's a bit more complicated to talk about this. We'll see, we'll see. Talking about this is not easy at the moment,” he said in a press conference ahead of his side's La Liga match against Valencia on Friday night.

"I said that we will not sign anyone in January before. Look, I can't talk about it now. This is not the time and place. We will see what will happen but I have a great squad. We have got injuries and problems with that but we are also able to overcome them.”

Alexander-Arnold has also been keen to keep his talks with Liverpool out of the public eye. Instead, he is focusing on helping the Reds to win silverware this season.

"I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public - and this one won't be either," he told Sky Sports in December.

"I think we win multiple trophies. I think that's the level that we're at, that's the level we've shown that we're capable of, beating the best teams in the world."
