Arne Slot suggests Liverpool have a new Thiago, he's trying to break into the starting line-up - opinion

He gave the Reds complete control and dominated the midfield when he was at his peak.

The only problem was that he was so very rarely available. Most of his time at Liverpool was spent in the treatment room.

Which is why his legacy at Anfield is tainted. He'll always be a what could have been. Never an icon or a legend which is what he should have been.

But now there is a new man at the club who could resurrect the essence of Thiago.

Liverpool's new Thiago based on Arne Slot's words
Curtis Jones will be seen in a completely new light after the Everton derby. The scouse midfielder not only changed the game with his impact but he was also involved in a tussle with Abdoulaye Doucoure after he celebrated Everton's equaliser in front of Liverpool fans.

Jones was subsequently sent off after the final whistle but despite the reprimand he has etched himself into cult hero status.

Pictures of his antics have gone live on social media and Liverpool fans are very much loving him at the moment for standing up for the Reds.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of Wolves, Arne Slot also brought attention to Jones' performance.

"Good thing is we play so many games. I was planning to start him vs Plymouth but he wasn't completely recovered," Slot said.

"I liked him a lot (vs Everton) it was best part of our game and only part of our game I felt a bit of comfort and that it feels like a bit of control.

"Before we made the subs, the game could have gone either way."

The control part that Slot talks about here very much sounds like Thiago. He was brought into Liverpool for the exact same reasons.

Now it's Jones who is being asked to play that role and based on his performance against Everton, the way he came on and dictated the midfield, those comparisons are very apt.

Obviously, it's early days, but in Jones, Slot could have exactly the type of midfielder he needs to replace the Thiago void in the squad.

The next step for him is to break into the starting line-up, with Jones currently the fourth choice among the midfielders in the pecking order.
