‘I wanted to commit’: ‘World class’ player says he never actually wanted to leave Arsenal

Arsenal have had to say some difficult goodbyes to some fan favourites over the years.

Aaron Ramsdale left Arsenal in the summer after becoming a real fan favourite at the Emirates in recent years.

Mesut Ozil was released by Arsenal after years of good service to the Gunners a few years ago, while it was a similar story for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang under Mikel Arteta.

Aaron Ramsey was also released by Arsenal back in 2019, joining Juventus on a free transfer.

Ramsey would reportedly earn £400,000-a-week in Turin, but according to the player himself, he was never keen on this move.

Indeed, speaking on Premier League stories, Ramsey has been discussing his departure from Arsenal, and he says that he actually never wanted to leave the club.

Ramsey spoke about his departure from the Emirates.

According to the midfielder, he was ready to sign a new contract with Arsenal, but, for one reason or another, Unai Emery decided to take away the offer.

Ramsey was described as ‘world-class’ not long after leaving Arsenal, via the BBC, but, for some reason, the Gunners didn’t want to keep the Welshman.

“I wanted to commit to Arsenal, but then for whatever reason, what happened I don’t know, the new manager came in and then the contract wasn’t there anymore,” Ramsey said.

“When Juventus came calling then in January, you know, I had to sort of think about life after Arsenal and secure that as well. It was an experience I was excited about.”

Ramsey left Arsenal to join one of Europe’s biggest clubs, Juventus.

However, it’s fair to say that life in Italy didn’t quite go to plan for Ramsey.

Indeed, the Welshman struggled to get to grips with Serie A, his goalscoring form dipped, and he wasn’t getting as many games as he’d have hoped for.

However, the midfielder never quite recaptured his best form after leaving Arsenal, and while the Welshman was ultimately a legend for the Gunners, perhaps Emery was right to let the midfielder go at that point in time
