Liverpool's Joe Gomez faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after tests revealed he has damaged his hamstring.

Gomez, 27, was forced off hurt after just 11 minutes of Liverpool ’s shock FA Cup loss at Plymouth on Sunday. The England defender, who has made just 17 appearances this season under Arne Slot, has a hamstring injury and will have further tests to discover how long he will be crocked.

Liverpool were already without young midfielder Tyler Morton, who has been struggling with a shoulder injury. They were able to welcome back Trent Alexander-Arnold against Everton, though, with the right-back playing the final half-hour after two games out.

Ahead of that Everton game, manager Arne Slot had confirmed Gomez's latest injury was on the same leg he'd had trouble with before his latest comeback. That comeback lasted just 11 minutes, though.

First-choice centre-back partnership Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate started at Goodison Park, as they were likely to do regardless of Gomez's situation. Everton caused Slot's team problems, though, with a late thunderbolt from James Tarkowski securing a 2-2 draw.

“That will be a special moment for the rest of my career and probably the biggest moment for me really because to score like that is special,” centre-back Tarkowski said after the game. “I’ve had a couple of promotions and playing for my country, but this is the biggest. With everything that’s happening right now, leaving this iconic stadium, a special stadium, it will be the biggest one of my career.

“It was mental. There were people grabbing me. I had an 80-year-old grabbing me and then a five-year-old kid pulling me to the floor, there were stewards everywhere, it was chaos, but it shows what a moment it is. With the occasion, it just feels special. I’m just pleased to be part of it.”

The late drama was followed by clashes after the final whistle. Players from both sides were shown red cards, as was Liverpool boss Arne Slot, but the Reds' captain Van Dijk also addressed the dropped points when speaking to Match of the Day after the draw.

"We have put ourselves in a solid position," the Dutchman said on Wednesday night. "We all know we have so many difficult games coming up. We need everyone at their best. Everyone should be disappointed on the last part of this game but from tomorrow the focus will be on recovery.

"The main thing for us is to completely focus on ourselves, and as fans as well, don't look at what others are doing and writing, just focus on us. Every game will be tough until the end of the season, then we will see at the end of the road if it is enough. But we have put ourselves in a good position and we have to keep fighting."
