Aaron Ramsdale set for transfer reunion less than a year after £25m Arsenal move

Aaron Ramsdale is reportedly being lined up for a potential summer transfer by former club Bournemouth. The 26-year-old, who left Arsenal last summer to join Southampton for £25million, could be on the move once again with Saints on the verge of suffering a second relegation in three years.

Ivan Juric's Southampton sit bottom of the Premier League on just nine points from their 29 fixtures. It's a matter of when, not if, Saints are relegated, as they sit 17 points behind 17th-place Wolves.

There is no doubt that Ramsdale wouldn't want to drop down to the Championship as he tries to keep in the England squad for the World Cup in 2026, meaning that a departure this summer is likely.

And Bournemouth are among those eyeing up a move for Ramsdale - five years on since he left the Vitality Stadium to move to Sheffield United. The Sun reports that Andoni Iraola's Cherries, who are looking to sign two goalkeepers in the summer window, have identified Ramsdale as an option.

Udinese 'keeper Maduka Okoye is another that Bournemouth are tracking, as they plan for an overhaul in that position. Kepa Arrizabalaga has been their No.1 this season and could sign on a permanent deal after spending the campaign on loan from Chelsea, but his form has dropped of recent late.

Despite saving a first-half penalty from Erling Haaland on Sunday, Kepa was at fault for Manchester City's winner as Bournemouth lost 2-1 in their FA Cup quarter-final. The on loan Spaniard allowed Omar Marmoush's shot to squirm under his body and trickle into the back of the net.

Ramsdale spent three years at Bournemouth after joining the club from Sheffield United in 2017. Having enjoyed time out on loan at Chesterfield and Wimbledon, Ramsdale cemented himself as their first-choice goalkeeper in 2019/20, starting in 37 of their 38 Premier League matches.

But after Bournemouth were relegated to the Championship, Ramsdale re-joined Sheffield United in August 2020. Once again, Ramsdale was on the move at the end of his first season back at Bramall Lane, however, after failing to rescue the Blades from the drop, as he made the switch to Arsenal.

Ramsdale replaced Bernd Leno as Arsenal's No.1 shortly after his move to the Emirates Stadium and was a virtual ever-present for two years. But David Raya's arrival dropped Ramsdale down to second-choice and he left the Gunners left summer after making just six Premier League appearances in 2023/24.

Reflecting on his departure from Arsenal, Ramsdale said: "I've been around football long enough that the manager's decision is the manager's decision. I tried my best to change his mind and force my way back in. His mind was set and at the same time David had a great season.

"You can have all the upset or qualms about being taken out but when someone else is delivering, you've just got to take it on the chin. It was tough but I've found a new home and I'm looking forward to playing again. You move on, there's no bad blood and you've got to restart your career again.

"It was a really difficult season but my character and personality, I started the game by enjoying it but when it gets taken away, it's tough. That's why unfortunately you have to move on but I'm happy about where I'm at now.
