Calafiori stayed on the pitch until the end of the 90 minutes during Italy’s 2-1 loss against Germany in San Siro on Thursday night, despite picking up an injury to his knee in stoppage time.
The former Bologna centre-back slipped and landed awkwardly on the San Siro turf, appearing to twist his knee uncomfortably in the process. CT Luciano Spalletti later confirmed that Calafiori had felt something wrong in his knee, and the 22-year-old was seen limping away from the mixed zone after full-time.
Calafiori recovery time revealed
Reports from Corriere dello Sport on Friday confirm that Calafiori has suffered a first to second degree strain of the collateral ligament in his knee, which means that he is expected to miss around two to three weeks of action.
The Italy national team have since confirmed that he will return to Arsenal for further treatment.
That means he will not be involved for Italy when they look to turn things around against Germany in Dortmund on Sunday.
He is also likely to miss Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League fixtures against Fulham and Everton after the international break, and possibly the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid as well.
