David Ornstein: Arsenal now want 42-goal hitman who bagged hat-trick v Man City, Berta admires him

Arsenal are considering signing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres during the next summer transfer window, with newly-appointed sporting director Andrea Berta a long-term admirer, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The Gunners want a new number 9 ahead of next season, and while Newcastle United hitman Alexander Isak remains on their radar, getting him could prove tricky given the finances expected to be involved.

As a result, Arsenal are looking at realistic targets, and a serious move for Gyokeres could be on the cards following an amazing individual campaign.

The 26-year-old Sweden international has 42 goals and 11 assists in 42 games across all competitions this term after ending last season with 43 goals and 15 assists, and he convinced suitors of his quality by notching a hat-trick against Manchester City in a 4-1 victory in the Champions League last November.

Arsenal could do with such a hitman if they are to become regular Premier League winners again, and Berta could look to get a deal for Gyokeres over the line having monitored him before moving to North London.

The Gunners should be able to comfortably meet the demands of Sporting and the player once it becomes clear that they want to land him, but there will be fierce competition from other bigwigs for his services.

The former Coventry City star will be desperate to prove himself in the Premier League after Brighton & Hove Albion refused to give him the needed playing opportunities, and he could be the remaining piece needed to complete the puzzle as Arsenal look to establish themselves as perennial winners again.

Berta needs to get one of his first major decisions at the Emirates Stadium club right, and landing Gyokeres could make a huge difference as he looks to get his reign to the perfect start.
