‘He’s back’: Arne Slot is really pleased with 25-year-old Liverpool player

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has raved about Darwin Nunez after recently criticising the striker.

After Liverpool’s Premier League games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, Slot criticised Nunez and questioned his work-rate.

However, Slot was impressed with the 25-year-old Uruguay international striker for his performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League this week.

Liverpool beat PSG 1-0 away from home at Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie on Wednesday evening.

Harvey Elliott scored the only goal of the match in the 87th minute. It was Nunez who provided the assist.

Slot told The Mirror about Nunez: “I think he was just back to being the normal Darwin, the player he was for seven or eight months.

“I think once or twice – for the games I mentioned – was exceptional and for the other games, he’s so loved by the fans because he’s always given everything since he’s been here.

“That’s what he’s always done. That’s what he did against Paris St Germain and that’s what he did in the last week as well.

“He had one or two games that were not perfect, that also had to do with him missing that chance against Villa.

“But sometimes these things happen and now he’s back to being the normal Darwin.”

View: Darwin Nunez’s days at Liverpool are numbered
Nunez is a very hard-working striker who gives his all on the pitch and contributes by making life tough for the opposition defenders.

However, the 25-year-old is not very prolific, and it is hard to see him improve his goalscoring prowess anytime soon.

If it has not happened for Nunez by now, it is hard to envisage him getting any better in terms of scoring goals.

The Uruguayan has scored only 39 goals in 133 appearances for Liverpool so far in his career. Nunez has provided 23 assists in those games.

Isak is one of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League. The Sweden international has found the back of the net 19 times in the league already this season, while assisting five.

Liverpool’s reported interest in Isak suggests that the Premier League leaders are planning to offload Nunez for good in the summer transfer window.

The Reds will take on Southampton at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

With the Saints rooted to the foot of the league table, Liverpool are expected to win comfortably.
