With nothing left to play for in the Premier League bar qualification for Europe, attention has already begun switching to the summer and how Berta will go about his first transfer window at Arsenal following his departure from Atlético Madrid.

One of his key targets is believed to be Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who could come in to fill the gaps left in midfield by the pending departures of both Thomas Partey and Jorginho.

Arsenal are attempting to agree a pre-summer deal for Zubimendi, who Kieran Tierney called "world class", and they've been in advanced talks since as far back as January.

However, Real Madrid have also opened talks with Zubimendi's camp, and have reportedly made it clear that they wish to sign the £50m Spaniard ahead of Arsenal.

Arsenal "very, very likely" to sign Martin Zubimendi
Amid the fierce competition from Real and other elite sides, Sky reporter Sheth has shared an encouraging update on Arsenal's pursuit of the 26-year-old.

The reliable journalist, speaking on Sky Sports' Back Pages podcast, says that Arsenal are "almost definitely" going to sign Zubimendi, and he's very, very likely going to join Arteta's side, coming after he snubbed Liverpool's advances last year.

“I’d say that the Zubimendi one is almost definitely going to happen to Arsenal," said Sheth.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi
"I just wonder when you look back now to the summer transfer window, Liverpool were all set to sign Martin Zubimendi, and then there was a late change of heart. It’s not been confirmed to anyone, but seeing now, a year later, he’s very, very likely to join Arsenal, was there a late intervention by Arsenal in the summer?

“You’d have to ask that question because he looked all set to go to Liverpool. It looked like it was a done deal. The deal was agreed.

“It was him who changed his mind in the last minute. And you just wonder whether Arsenal had come in and said, look, we can’t bring you in now, we desperately want you. Mikel Arteta knows him really well.

“And maybe he just thought, I’ll just bide my time for the time being. I actually want to go to Arsenal. Maybe he thought that.”
