The Athletic: Why Arteta wasn’t a fan of 3x hat-trick sensation Arsenal sold for £4m

AS Monaco striker Mika Biereth was not seen as being completely compatible with the all-round profile of striker Mikel Arteta likes at Arsenal, according to The Athletic.

The 22-year-old did not get to make a first-team debut for the Gunners despite making it to the bench four times as the boss was not a fan, and he was eventually sold to Sturm Graz for £4 million last summer after an initial loan spell with the Austrian top-flight club.

Arsenal included a sell-on clause in the deal, and the Ligue 1 club bought him for £12.6m in January.

The Denmark youth international has hit the ground running in the French top-flight, becoming the first player to score three hat-tricks in his first seven Ligue 1 appearances for 70 years.

Those close to Biereth believed selling him at the time was the natural conclusion to three years of loan progression by Arsenal to make a trading profit on him, and they remain convinced it was the right decision by both parties.

There are no hard feelings from the player’s side as he is thankful for his time at the North London club, but Arteta could be wishing he was not sold given the current situation of his attack.

The Gunners could do with someone like Biereth within their ranks right now amid the injury woes which have threatened to derail their Premier League title pursuit.

The FA have been alerted to the impressive form of the London-born forward and will be hoping they can convince him to play for the Three Lions ahead of his three other options.

Arsenal are expected to sign a striker in the summer, but they may need to break the bank to land a quality one and could have saved themselves millions had they managed to hold on to the shining Monaco star.
