The 24-year-old looked likely to leave Palace last year, with Newcastle United showing constant interest in him, but he ended up staying put at Selhurst Park. Tottenham are also thought to have had a £75m bid rejected in January.
Guehi may well leave this summer, however, feeling that now is the best time for a new challenge in his career, and now a new report has emerged regarding Liverpool’s interest in him.
According to The Boot Room, the Reds and Chelsea are the “favourites” to sign the centre-back in the summer window, as they battle to acquire his signature.
The report also states that Liverpool “enquired about the possibility of bringing the Crystal Palace captain to Anfield last summer”, but “the timing was not right” in the end.
Perfect centre-back option for Liverpool?
Guehi has now proven himself as a top-level player for some time, despite still only being 24, so he could be a great signing for Liverpool this summer.
The England international possesses strong leadership, quality on the ball and a strong reading of the game, averaging 4.6 clearances per game in the Premier League this season, as well as enjoying an 83.4% pass completion rate, which should only improve playing under Arne Slot.
Guehi has also proven his worth for England, standing out as possibly the Three Lions’ best player at Euro 2024, leading to former manager Gareth Southgate to say of him:
“He’s been exceptional. We obviously lose him now for the next game, but he’s a young defender that we’ve had enormous belief in and he’s justified that with his performances in this tournament.”
Palace will only allow Guehi to leave for a huge amount of money, however, so Liverpool’s recruitment team have to make sure that he is worth it and that there aren’t both superior and cheaper options out there.
