Real Madrid now see ‘second-best player in the world’ joining Arsenal - The Athletic

Despite some voices at Real Madrid liking Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, Los Blancos claim they are not actively working on his signing at this point and even suggest they see him joining Arsenal, according to The Athletic.

Reports have suggested the Gunners and Madrid could find themselves in a tussle over the 26-year-old Spain international, but it appears the La Liga club are not keen on recruiting his services this summer.

Arsenal remain confident they are well-positioned to complete a deal for Zubimendi when the summer transfer window opens, with recent reports claiming it could be wrapped up by June.

Once dubbed the ‘second-best player in the world’ by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, the Sociedad star has proven himself in his position over the years, with Liverpool boss Arne Slot very desperate to land him last summer.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is also said to be a huge fan of the defensive midfielder, and landing him would be huge for Arsenal given what he brings to the table.

The Gunners have expressed to Sociedad their willingness to activate the £52 million release clause in the contract of the Spaniard, and it is safe to say a deal is nearing completion.

Negotiations are progressing well between both clubs to make Zubimendi their first signing of the summer transfer window, and the midfielder could be a massive difference-maker for the Gunners going forward if snapped up.

Liverpool are set to pip them to the Premier League title as the Reds only need six more points to be crowned champions of the 2024-25 campaign ahead of the remaining six games, but the Champions League remains within grasp and winning it will boost their chances of landing top players in the upcoming transfer window.
