According to rumors, Man Utd is trying to find a “reliable replacement” before firing Ruben Amorim following a subpar start to the new campaign.
With Amorim’s team finishing 15th in the Premier League standings and losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final, the Red Devils had a forgettable season in 24/25.
But for decades, Manchester United has been firing managers on a regular basis without coming close to matching Sir Alex Ferguson’s 27-year stay.
The Premier League team spent almost £200 million to revamp its assault, and the Red Devils board trusted Amorim to turn things around over the summer.
Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko have all joined for hefty prices, but there hasn’t been much evidence that Manchester United has fixed other problems from the previous campaign.
After losing badly to Grimsby in the League Cup on Wednesday, Manchester United began the season with just one point from their first two games against Arsenal and Fulham.
In a new low under Amorim, Man Utd fell 12-11 on penalty kicks against Grimsby after rallying from a two-goal deficit to force the match to penalties against the League Two team.
His dismissal is now “imminent” because to the Grimsby outcome, according to the Spanish website Fichajes, and his “departure is considered virtually certain.”
Zinedine Zidane and Julen Lopetegui are suggested as potential candidates, although the source also states that “the board is first looking for a reliable replacement before making the decision.”
Fichajes continues: ‘Everything points to the match against Burnley being the ultimate test: if the team doesn’t get a win, Amorim could be fired before the September international break.
‘The names of possible replacements are already starting to be bandied about in the corridors at Old Trafford, including Julen Lopetegui and Zinedine Zidane, although no official contacts have been confirmed.’
Following their defeat to Grimsby, Amorim insisted that he was “shocked” at his side’s performance against a fourth-tier outfit, who deserve a lot of credit for their display.
Amorim said on ITV: “I am shocked because we are in the moment when we make a lot of changes. We try to fight a lot of things but then when we have these moments, we need to show up.
“If we don’t show up, you can feel that something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again.”
