Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha has pulled out of the Brazil national team after suffering an injury in the 3-2 win over Burnley.
Cunha sustains injury
Cunha was a member of the starting lineup that helped United defeat Burnley and earn their first victory of the 2025–2026 campaign.
But he was only able to play 31 minutes before having to leave due to what looked to be a hamstring injury. Cunha was substituted by Ruben Amorim for Joshua Zirkzee, who played the remainder of the match at Old Trafford.
When pressed for an update on Cunha following the game, Amorim said he was unaware of the entire scope of the problem.
The only thing the United head coach mentioned was that Cunha was necessary for United to be competitive during the season.
The South American national team has acknowledged that Cunha has left the squad ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifying matches against Chile and Bolivia next month.
Cunha withdraws from Brazil squad
In a statement posted on X, the Brazil national team said, “Coach Carlo Ancelotti called up Flamengo’s attacker Samuel Lino this Saturday (30) for Brazil’s matches against Chile and Bolivia, in the last two rounds of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.”
“Mateus Cunha, an attacker, was released from the call-up following a discussion between the Manchester United and National Team medical departments regarding his muscle injury sustained during the Premier League match against Burnley.”
Now, United fans must wait impatiently to find out how serious Cunha’s injury is and how long he will be out.
I hope it’s nothing major and that the 26-year-old can get back to playing as soon as possible.
Since joining United from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the summer, Cunha has been a welcome change. He was acquired by the Red Devils from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million.
He hasn’t opened his goalscoring account yet, but he has been very close on a number of occasions. His outstanding ball-carrying and dribbling skills have been his most notable attribute, as they have continuously assisted in moving the team up the pitch.
