Former Man Utd defender left stunned by ‘crazy’ second-half tactical blunder by Amorim vs Grimsby

After a nail-biting protracted shootout at Blundell Park, League Two team Grimsby Town stunned Manchester United, sending the team reeling out of the Carabao Cup in complete humiliation.

The home fans went wild as the hosts attacked Man United with unrestrained vigor, scoring twice in the first thirty minutes.

In order to force penalties, the Red Devils fought their way back through Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo.

The match then went into sudden death as Matheus Cunha missed the opportunity to win from the penalty spot.

Bryan Mbeumo’s penalty kick struck the crossbar in a spectacular finale, causing chaos as joyous Grimsby fans flocked to the field to commemorate one of the team’s best evenings ever.

In an interview with Sky Sports, former United defender Phil Jones said that the tactical shift Ruben Amorim made when his team was behind left him perplexed.

They still used a back five when he switched Mason Mount to that position, but they were constructing with one against Grimsby, who was seated on the box’s edge.

Your spare man was nearly in build-up when you wanted him to make an overload through the middle or out wide, which was kind of higher up the pitch.

“He’d (Matthijs de Ligt) be the one joining in, and with the greatest respect to him, he should have an attacking player getting into the box, where a lot of the time it was a defender, an extra man, that it just seems crazy that he is so wedded to this formation, at all costs and at any circumstance in a match.”

Mason Mount came off the bench in the 64th minute and was forced to play as a left wing-back, which was incredibly awful.

During his first two appearances, the Englishman had shown sharp, combining cunning assault combinations with knitted play.

Grimsby’s uncooperative backline might have been unlocked by his deft runs and subtle flicks.

However, Amorim somehow forfeited that inventiveness, banishing him far and wide in order to appease his formation.

The game might have finished in regular time if the head coach had used Mount to generate an overload in the box.

Matthijs de Ligt also played out of position, in addition to Mount.

The Dutch international was frequently in the scoring zone.

He even made two unsuccessful attempts, both of which went harmlessly over the bar.

Mount was begging for that position, not a center-back.

The Portuguese coach has already made a number of mistakes in his brief time at United, and this was just another in-game management gaffe.
