Gary Neville has revealed Manchester United’s plan for incoming signing Senne Lammens and predicted his arrival will spell the end for Andre Onana’s Old Trafford career.
Despite Ruben Amorim’s open support for Onana and Altay Bayindir, United is negotiating a contract for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Lammens.
Lammens is admired by Manchester City as well, but it appears that the Belgian will join the Red Devils after reaching a personal agreement.
Neville, who thinks Lammens is being signed as a No. 2, queried his contacts at Manchester United about the strategy for the player, who is anticipated to cost around £20 million.
Neville is now fully aware that the club has concerns about his own position in the squad, but he still thinks the move might be the beginning of Onana’s demise at United.
Speaking last week following United’s Premier League opening against Arsenal, Neville maintained that the goalkeeper situation was a “glaring issue” for his former club, citing Onana’s numerous high-profile errors from the previous year.
Neville told NBC Sports, “I’ve been asking around about that one this morning and spoke to a few people at United,” in response to a question concerning Manchester United’s pursuit of Lammens ahead of their match against Fulham on Sunday.
They definitely need a No. 1 player, but it seems like the new boy joining would be a No. 2 who would start on the bench.
“Goals remain United’s top priority, and we believe Cunha, Mbeumo, and Sesko will accomplish that.” Although we believe Onana will begin today, the circumstances are incorrect.
“Bayindir arrived last week, but he frequently makes mistakes.” Onana’s confidence must be shaken now that he is aware that United has been searching Europe for a new goalie and successor for him, and he may be considering leaving.
That is something they must deal with. They need to resolve that and the position of center midfielder next to Bruno [Fernandes] this week [before the transfer deadline].
Asked who he would start against Fulham on Sunday afternoon, Neville added: ‘I would go with Onana, he’s the most reliable out of the unreliable goalkeepers they have.
‘I think Bayindir is young, Onana for me is the better goalkeeper, although he makes mistakes as well and he’s not ideal.
‘But I think he’s got a bigger personality and character than Bayindir and he’s got that experience, so I think Onana should start.’
Before the summer transfer window ends, Manchester United is already attempting to sell Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho.
Sancho has drawn interest from several Serie A clubs, but he has turned down a transfer to Roma. Meanwhile, Chelsea is in negotiations to sign Garnacho.
Amorim’s “bomb squad” includes Garnacho, Sancho, and Antony, who are training apart from the rest of the Manchester United starting lineup.
