Manchester United legend Gary Neville has told Ruben Amorim what he must change to solve his biggest issues.
Ruben Amorim stated in the summer that he hopes to stay at Manchester United for the next 20 years, but for the time being, it’s difficult to look beyond his next game as manager.
An already miserable start to the 2025–26 season was compounded by a penalty shootout loss to Grimsby. In their first three games, the Red Devils have lost all three.
Amorim’s harsh criticism of his team following the Carabao Cup loss has stoked rumors that he may step down, but it is probable that he will have one last opportunity to improve matters this weekend against Burnley.
Gary Neville tells Ruben Amorim what to change at Man United
For better or worse, Amorim has steadfastly adhered to his strategies at United, which has drawn a lot of criticism from commentators and supporters.
Though results have not gone his way, the Portuguese head coach is adamant about making his 3-4-2-1 system work at Old Trafford.
Gary Neville, a veteran of United, was asked on The Overlap what advise he would give Amorim.
“If you asked me what my one bit of advice would be, it would have to be sort your midfield out,” Neville said.
“Because you can’t have that midfield. They were actually quite good when the front three and the back five were very compact and the two in midfield are tight together.
“Once it gets a bit spread, and Fulham got that, he then put Mount and Fernandes in there and the game opened up.
“Then he had to take Mount off and he put Ugarte in there. Before you know it, you’ve had three central midfield partnerships, you’ve had your back three changed. You’re changing a lot every game.”
Ruben Amorim has two conundrums to solve at Man United
Amorim was stunned and saddened on the touchline, and he declined to witness United’s shootout. He must be baffled as to why things aren’t going his way.
In the end, United has paid for individual mistakes in each of the first three games. After his No. 2 Altay Bayindir committed mistakes, Andre Onana’s performance against Grimsby was unacceptable.
The goalie problem needs to be fixed first. Senne Lammens is a goalkeeper valued at £17 million, and United is in advanced negotiations to acquire him.
The midfield predicament facing Amorim is the other pressing issue.
Coming off the bench against Grimsby, Bruno Fernandes made an impression, but it has been difficult to find his ideal partner. Although Kobbie Mainoo and his skipper have been vying for a spot, Amorim may be better off with the two of them together.
Throughout the season, supporters have been clamoring for midfield changes, and they are eager to see Mainoo get more playing time despite rumors that he is willing to leave.
In any case, Amorim has one final chance to try to secure his job before the international break. His midfield and goalkeeping choices against Burnley on Saturday afternoon will be closely watched.
