Manchester United received praise for their approach against Arsenal last week in their opening Premier League fixture despite defeat – but it’s all come crashing down after the draw at Fulham.
Prior to previous issues resurfacing in the disappointing outcome away to Fulham, United showed promise with new arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo during the opening weekend loss against Arsenal.
In addition to supporters asking why big-name summer acquisition Benjamin Sesko started on the bench against both Arsenal and Fulham, Ruben Amorim’s record was called into doubt when it was revealed that he had only won 28 points in 29 Premier League games for United.
Sesko, who cost £66 million to acquire from RB Leipzig, has only played 62 minutes in his two substitute appearances, recording one shot and falling short in two games where United required a goal.
Gary Neville slams Benjamin Sesko fitness and performs u-turn on how to use the striker
Gary Neville, a United icon, said on his Sky Sports podcast that he was mistaken to have urged Ruben Amorim to start Sesko at Fulham.
Neville now claims that Sesko is “nowhere near” the fitness levels needed to start in the Premier League after watching the Slovenian’s two substitute performances.
Neville remarked, “Let’s just say that Sesko isn’t even close to being fit or catching up right now.”
After the Fulham match, Ruben Amorim emphasized that Sesko “needs time,” saying, “It’s not easy.” He understands that the game is even faster than the Bundesliga, and there are occasions when you are on the bench and go to the game.
Gary Neville urges Ruben Amorim to start Benjamin Sesko at Grimsby in the Carabao Cup
This week, United travels to Blundell Park, a small venue in Grimsby Town, for a Carabao Cup second-round matchup that they typically avoid because of European obligations.
Neville has pushed the manager to use the encounter against the League Two opponents to give Sesko the match-sharpness he needs as Amorim attempts to prevent the ultimate upset.
Neville said, “He will have to get him in against Grimsby and give him 90 minutes.” “You can see he needs football, so he’s going to have to play him against Burnley next Saturday to get him going.”
After the Grimsby and Burnley fixtures, United face Manchester City and Chelsea after the international break, prompting Neville to add: “What you can’t do is let a player of that value, that potential, just keep being on the bench.”
