Kobbie Mainoo ‘responds’ to Ruben Amorim denying his Man Utd transfer request

Kobbie Mainoo has made his feelings clear on Ruben Amorim’s decision to deny him a move away from Manchester United, it has been reported.

According to BBC Sport, the 20-year-old midfielder asked to be let to go on loan from the team during the summer transfer window.

Serie A champions Napoli, who last season revitalized the career of his former United teammate Scott McTominay, are reportedly among the clubs interested in Mainoo.

Rasmus Hojlund, a United outcast who started most of the games but only managed four Premier League goals last season, is another player Antonio Conte’s team is interested in signing on loan.

After the 1-1 draw with Fulham, manager Amorim said that Mainoo was essentially vying with captain Bruno Fernandes for a starting position as a holding midfielder, which is why the academy product was not used as a replacement in United’s first two Premier League games.

But on Friday, in his pre-match press conference before his side take on Burnley at Old Trafford, the Portuguese boss spoke of his desire for Mainoo to stay.

“I want Kobbie to stay,” he began. “He needs to fight for his place, and we need Kobbie. So that is not going to change … I understand that the players that are not playing in this moment are disappointed, but everyone has the same opportunity to play. You have to fight during the week.”

The fact that Mainoo’s contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer of 2027 will undoubtedly be United’s top worry.

The 20-year-old would enter the last year of his contract and the club would have to face the difficult option of whether to sell him or make a last-ditch effort to renew before losing him for nothing if he were to leave on loan without a new deal in place before that tenure finishes.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Mainoo will reiterate his wish to go on loan in response to Amorim’s comments.

Talks between the player and the club reportedly took place on Thursday, but United ‘insisted’ that they would have to sign a replacement before letting him go, which seems increasingly implausible given the pace of their summer transfer dealings.

According to the source, Amorim was informed of Mainoo’s loan request but did not have a face-to-face conversation with the player prior to making his press conference remarks.

With less than 72 hours left in the transfer window, it appears that Mainoo, who is reportedly worried about his chances of playing time at Old Trafford, will need to make a significant adjustment in order to leave the team, either permanently or temporarily.
