Man Utd fans can’t believe what Grimsby posted minutes after Carabao Cup exit

Grimsby Town produced one of the most viral football-related social media posts of 2025 after they recorded a historic penalty shoot-out win against Manchester United.

With an overwhelming victory on Wednesday night, David Artell’s team guaranteed their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, a former United youth player, gave the League Two team an unexpected 2-0 lead in the first half at Blundell Park.

In what will go down as one of the most embarrassing outcomes in their recent history, Amorim’s team lost 12–11 on penalties despite a second-half comeback by the visitors to force penalties.

Grimsby added salt to the wounds shortly after the final whistle blew by posting something on X, formerly Twitter, that has since garnered almost 150,000 likes.

The club’s social media administrator became embroiled in a meme that has been making the rounds lately, as can be seen below. They posted an image of a fish with the caption, “You’ve just been slapped by the fish.”

This is how the post was received by admirers on social media.

Someone commented, “They’re bantering us off the face of the earth,” and another wrote: “My head would be on Mars if we’d just been knocked out by Grimsby Town and they posted this hahah.”

“Grimsby Town of League Two and not so long ago of the National League made this tweet after defeating Manchester United,” a third person said. Never before has football been so popular.

A fourth said: “Grimsby admin is absolutely off the rails,” and a fifth added: “YOU JUST GOT SLAPPED BY THE FISH.”

Ruben Amorim delivers no-nonsense interview after Grimsby defeat

A frustrated Ruben Amorim admitted “something has to change” after they suffered at the hands of Grimsby.

Speaking to ITV Sport in his post-match interview, he said: “It’s not about the result. I was not thinking about the penalties. I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today. I just want to apologise to our fans.

“Everything (was missing). We have to be proud to go to the pitch. We played quite well in the Premier League, and then we come to a fourth division team and play like that.”

“I am shocked,” he added. “We are in a moment when we made a lot of changes, we try to fight a lot of things, but in these moments we have to show up.

“When you don’t show up, you feel that something has to change, but we’re not going to change 22 players.”
