Man Utd set timeline for Ruben Amorim sack decision as ‘escape route’ to new club emerges

Manchester United have reportedly set a timeline ahead of a potential decision on Ruben Amorim’s future following the Red Devils’ League Cup exit against Grimsby – and the Portuguese is also linked to a Champions League club.

When League Two Grimsby eliminated United from the League Cup on Wednesday night through a penalty shootout, Amorim, 40, was in complete shock.

After thirty minutes, the Lincolnshire team had already taken a two-goal lead. However, the Premier League team rallied, with Harry Maguire tying the score with one minute remaining and Bryan Mbeumo scoring his first goal since joining from Brentford earlier this summer.

Despite all odds, the League Two team defeated United 12–11 in a penalty shootout to eliminate United from the competition.

Amorim was under more pressure after the loss since a number of coaches were vying for his job, including Michael Carrick, Sean Dyche, and Oliver Glasner.

“I am shocked because we are in the moment when we make a lot of changes,” Amorim said on ITV after the game.

“We try to fight a lot of things, but then when we have the moments, we need to show up.

“If we don’t show up, you can feel that something has to change, and you are not going to change 22 players again.”

According to The Times, despite rumors about his future, his employment seems secure for the time being.

According to the site, “Ruben Amorim will be in charge for Saturday’s match against Burnley and retains the backing of the Manchester United board.”

Despite his failures since taking over United last winter, Amorim is also said to have the “backing of the board” and co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.

“Ratcliffe is willing to give Amorim time to turn things around at Old Trafford,” according to the Times. If United keeps losing games, that patience will probably be put to the test in the upcoming weeks.

Amorim might be given “an escape route” to Benfica, according to The Times.

Amorim played with Benfica for nine years, making 153 appearances and contributing to three league championships.

But it’s unknown how Benfica supporters would react if he returned after managing bitter rivals Sporting for almost five years, from March 2020 until his departure in November 2024 to join United.
