Yet again, Manchester United needed a goal this weekend and turned to Harry Maguire to be their hero.
Maguire, a central defender, has occasionally saved United, but not always, and Ruben Amorim’s lack of choices against Fulham on Sunday was evident.
According to Gary Neville, Benjamin Sesko is “nowhere near” the necessary levels of fitness, and Amorim claims he “needs time” to become used to the Premier League’s fast pace.
However, United is pressed for time and must deal with a number of problems, not the least of which is their unimpressive midfield, which has not been bolstered during the summer.
Gary Neville identifies Kobbie Mainoo problem after Ruben Amorim’s latest snub at Fulham
Despite Casemiro and Mason Mount’s lackluster performances, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was benched for the second consecutive game. Neville claims that it is evident that Mainoo has dropped in Amorim’s hierarchy as a result.
“I wish Mainoo could have stepped up and been that person, but it’s pretty obvious that Ruben Amorim isn’t having him right now,” Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast.
“He puts Mason Mount back in there after starting with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, and then he puts [Manuel] Ugarte in front of him, which indicates that he’s really fourth choice.”
“That indicates that there will be an issue, so they will need to resolve it [during the transfer window].”
Kobbie Mainoo adds to Manchester United priorities in last week of summer transfer window
With one week left in the summer transfer window, Amorim might have to find a man who can breathe new life into the United midfield if Mainoo isn’t the solution.
Despite not having any European football to offer potential additions, United has spent a lot of money this summer on Cunha, Mbuemo, and Sesko.
Still, their midfield consists of an elderly Casemiro, inconsistent Manuel Ugarte, and captain Bruno Fernandes – who demonstrated on Sunday he isn’t always capable of rescuing United out of trouble as he has done so often.
Perhaps Mainoo’s most recent rejection serves as a reality check on his place in Amorim’s plans for this season, as he has previously been linked to the United exit door.
