Given that Real Betis withdrew their offer, Manchester United may be stuck with Antony as things stand.
The La Liga team had originally agreed to a deal worth €25 million, with possible add-ons worth an additional €3 million.
Since their original demand of €40 million was not being met, the Red Devils had also fought hard to include a 50% sell-on provision.
However, the agreement is presently off due to Antony’s wage demands and the parties’ inability to agree on the wage package.
Betis Statement
The Spanish side have now come up with a statement to explain their stance.
“Betis Statement: “There is no agreement and we have withdrawn the transfer offer because Real Betis can’t afford the transfer fee and the amounts that Manchester United must [instead] pay the player before the transfer.”
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, INEOS believes Betis is using this as a negotiation ploy to get United to reduce their demands in general.
With two years remaining on his present deal, which pays £6 million annually, Antony is unlikely to receive a higher salary from Betis.
The Red Devils wanted all three parties to reach a solution and meet in the middle so they wouldn’t have to pay the majority, but the Brazilian was expecting United would pay a severance payment because he isn’t in the mood to decrease his demands.
According to reports, Betis has stated unequivocally that they would not make any payments, which has complicated the process.
Stand-off between all parties
“United hope it is a negotiating tactic. Betis claim United must come back to them with a lower overall package. It’s a stand-off between the two clubs.
“Unclear if Antony will also now lower his terms to make the move happen,” Jacobs wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
United made the agreement in the first place because they are desperate to get rid. INEOS will not have been happy with Antony’s involvement in all of this. The Brazilian is getting the move of his dreams, but he refuses to give up.
The co-owners should also be steadfast and set an example for the athlete if he refuses to change. The 20-time English league champions have been struggling with outgoings for far too long. They have to alter it.
It will be intriguing to observe who blinks first during this standoff, which is anticipated to go until the deadline day.
