Report: Man Utd now eyeing move to sign £100m midfielder amid Mainoo update

As an alternative to their previous transfer targets, Manchester United is ‘big admirers’ of Adam Wharton, a central midfield standout from Crystal Palace, and they may try to significantly enhance their midfield ranks in the upcoming months.

The Red Devils have reportedly looked to other alternatives after United withdrew their pursuit of Brighton star Carlos Baleba two weeks ago due to the Seagulls’ refusal to sell their top midfield player, according to a report by Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.

Report: Man Utd ‘Admire’ Adam Wharton, Though Deal is Not Close

One of those is Wharton, who only 18 months ago moved from Championship team Blackburn Rovers to Crystal Palace, where he quickly rose to prominence in the Premier League. Although no interest has been expressed as of yet, Old Trafford officials appreciate the England international, who has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s team for the forthcoming qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia. He may play in their midfield in the upcoming years.

Any transfer would need to fall short of Brighton’s £115 million asking price for Baleba; the Seagulls used the sale of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea in 2023 as a benchmark. Wharton had been said to be leaving Selhurst Park for £100 million.

However, Mainoo has missed both of their Premier League games this season. The Carrington academy graduate requested to be sent out on loan on Friday, which may pave the way for the Theatre of Dreams to recruit another midfield player.

Wharton’s explosive performances in central midfield have drawn interest from clubs in England and Europe. His vision, passing range, tackle strength, and ability to keep the game simple for his offensive teammates to profit from have impressed both scouts and supporters.

If Mainoo leaves, United could definitely use some midfield additions, and they could do much worse than recruit the 21-year-old sensation, who has already made 38 Premier League appearances and earned England youth matches.

Being labelled as a ‘joy to play with’ by former Palace teammate Eberechi Eze, his chance creation from deep would allow the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to up their output in front of goals.
