Even though Manchester United defeated Burnley in the Premier League, the Portuguese coach gave a concerning report on three first-team players. In the first half of the game, Matheus Cunha was substituted out due to a suspected hamstring injury, and Mason Mount was also substituted out at halftime.
When Amorim chose to replace Cunha with Joshua Zirkzee rather than Benjamin Sesko, who cost £74 million, it caused some controversy. However, the United manager acknowledged after the game that Sesko had been experiencing fitness problems.
Regarding Cunha, Mount, and Sesko’s level of fitness, he remarked: “I’m not sure. We’ll check them out [Cunha and Mount]. We definitely need those guys to be fierce competitors. We shielded Ben from the penalties today as well since he [Sesko] had cramping at the end of the game and was truly on the limit. I thought Ben hadn’t played 90 minutes during the preseason, but he did on Wednesday.
Given that they will be off the firing line for a few weeks, Amorim and United will undoubtedly be grateful for the international break. When the Premier League resumes, however, all eyes will be on the Etihad Stadium as United will be visiting fierce rivals Manchester City.
Even though they managed to secure the three points, United had to endure yet another exhausting afternoon. Overall, the first half looked promising for the Red Devils, who should have led by more than one goal at the intermission. However, United’s performance started to deteriorate (again) in the second half.
Bryan Mbeumo went down the other end to put United ahead once more after Lyle Foster leveled the score for the visitors. However, Burnley’s second equalizer of the match, scored by Jaidon Anthony, put the score at 2-2, where it stayed until the very end of the game.
Amorim admitted he is an emotional manager and will continue to wear his heart on his sleeve when United are toiling. He said: “I was frustrated like any Man Utd supporter, we had chances to score more goals, create more chances.
