Ruben Amorim gives Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount injury update after Man Utd beat Burnley

Ruben Amorim says he is ‘concerned’ after both Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount came off injured during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Burnley.

In an exciting match at Old Trafford on Saturday, Bruno Fernandes struck a penalty in the 96th minute to give United their first victory of the year.

The outcome relieves some of the strain on Amorim, whose team was humiliated by Grimsby Town’s elimination from the Carabao Cup last week.

The Red Devils appear to have lost not one but two important players to injury, though, as Cunha hobbled off in the 31st minute after seemingly hurting his hamstring.

Kobbie Mainoo unexpectedly replaced Mount during the half after he had played well in the first half, raising suspicions that he had suffered an injury.

After the match, a distraught Amorim told Sky Sports that was really the situation and disclosed that the England midfielder was playing despite being injured, though he was unable to provide specifics.

The Portuguese remarked, “It was difficult to lose a player like Cunha and Mason Mount – Mason Mount played about 30 minutes with an injury.”

He said, “I don’t know, I don’t know, but I’m concerned about that,” in response to the question of whether these were long-term issues. We shall see; they are very essential to us.

“I don’t know [how bad they are], we will check them,” he added later in his press conference following the game.

“These guys need to be fiercely competitive.”

The international break has arrived, which is beneficial for United since it gives Cunha and Mount more time to heal and gives them more than two weeks before their next match.

The bad news is that they have a home match against Chelsea six days after their derby match against Manchester City on September 14.

Amorim stated: “I am always speaking with them [the board] to try and improve the team.” The injury might potentially change United’s ambitions in the transfer market, which has a deadline on Monday.

He went on to say, “Like any Manchester United supporter, I was frustrated by the game against Burnley. We had opportunities to score more goals and create more chances.” We were the superior team today, and the football match was fair.

‘Some moments are really decisive. Sometimes we were not playing so well, but you can see the effort of everyone on the pitch wanting to win.’
