Ruben Amorim has been criticised for a ‘staggering’ decision he made for Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham in the Premier League.
On Sunday, United earned their first point of the new season at Craven Cottage after losing 1-0 to Arsenal on the first weekend.
United took the lead around the hour mark thanks to an own goal from Rodrigo Muniz, and Emile Smith Rowe tied the score in the 73rd minute.
Bruno Fernandes smashed his spot-kick far over the bar in the first half, missing a penalty.
Benjamin Sesko, a £74 million summer acquisition for Manchester United, started on the bench before being brought on after halftime, just like he did against Arsenal.
In his pregame interview, Amorim explained why Sesko did not start against Fulham, saying, “Benjamin has been with us for two weeks, he’s trying to understand everything.”
We must exercise some patience. Our only goals are to win the game and assist every player.
However, Andy Gray expressed his shock and surprise at Amorim’s choice, saying he did not understand why Sesko did not start.
“I don’t understand.” The former Scotland striker remarked on beIN SPORTS, “I am shocked.”
“Believe me, I didn’t need three or four weeks to understand the team after moving to clubs for big money during my career.”
“Sesko, an international football player, cost over £70 million to play in the Bundesliga.” Are you saying that he is unable to play as a center forward for Manchester United?
“Come on!” Really, I must have missed something. Sesko should be up there with Mbeumo and Cunha if you support United.
After a preseason in Germany, he is healthy and prepared to play. I’m confused; I don’t understand.
Both Fulham and Manchester United are still looking for their first victories of the new season as a result of the draw at Craven Cottage.
“It was a close game in the second half, but Fulham was the superior team in the final 15 to 20 minutes,” Clinton Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live. Their substitutions improved the game’s outcome.
A draw is most likely a fair outcome. Although Fernandes’ missed penalty and [Matheus] Cunha’s first-half opportunity may compel United to object, the outcome was fair overall.
On Wednesday night, Fulham plays Bristol City, while Manchester United plays Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.
