Ruben Amorim is the subject of plenty of criticism right now for the way his Manchester United team have performed this season.
With Ruben Amorim already facing criticism, the 2025–26 campaign has descended into crisis more quickly than anyone could have anticipated.
Amorim assured Manchester United supporters in May that good times were on the way, but by the last week of August, the summertime joy had come to an end.
Amorim criticized his team’s performance against League Two Grimsby and said that the 12–11 penalty shootout loss stunned him.
Phil Jones criticized Amorim’s tactics after this most recent loss, saying that there are serious doubts about the team and the setup.
Kobbie Mainoo’s role under Amorim has been in the news for the past week, and many people are upset over the 20-year-old’s lack of playing time in the season’s first two games.
Amorim has now come under fire from Tony Mowbray for employing another gifted athlete.
Tony Mowbray says Ruben Amorim is wasting the talent of Amad
Tony Mowbray is a typical English football league manager, with a long resume of clubs throughout the pyramid.
A Manchester United loanee at Sunderland is one of the unique football players the boss has managed.
When Mowbray had Amad on loan at Sunderland for the 2022–2023 season, United’s number 16 made his big debut in English football.
Amad left a lasting effect, speaking highly of Mowbray’s influence and his role as a father figure. Mowbray has now expressed his frustration at Amorim’s misuse of Amad in an interview with Sam Allardyce on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.
“Why would you be so stuck on one system?”, Mowbray asked. “Trying to force Amad Diallo as a right-wing-back. Amad is a brilliant footballer, Man United class I would say. Amad Diallo, he’s a genius.
“Talk about not having to look at the ball, the ball is stuck to his left-foot, a brilliant football player and a brilliant human being. But they’re playing him at right wing-back just to fit into your system.
“I had him at Sunderland and he was a genius. Amad always wanted to get better and practice.
“He should be bending it into the top corner with his left foot, he should be sitting people on their backsides and and scoring wonderful goals like I know he can, why’s he chasing people back into his own box?”
Since Amad has been permanently relegated to wing-back, where he isn’t close enough to goal to cause major issues, his form has drastically declined this season. In a way, Mowbray is right on the money.
Amad and Bryan Mbeumo are two sides of the same coin at Manchester United
There isn’t really a spot for Amad anywhere in the starting lineup, so Mowbray may be right when he says that Amorim is essentially wasting him by deploying him in the wing-back position.
Bryan Mbeumo, a £65 million attacker who is one of the league’s greatest players on his day and an immediate starter, is ranked ahead of Amad in the right-sided number 10 position.
As a result, Mbeumo would either use Amad as a wing-back or as his backup. Amorim has a happy problem because both players are excellent left-footers who score goals creatively.
Amad can be a winger while playing right wing-back, but at the moment, he and Mbeumo are studying each other’s game because of their similarities that clash on the field.
Amorim will have to deal with this issue once more, but it may also resolve itself because skilled football players can often learn how to play with other skilled players.
