Scott McTominay has reportedly phoned one of his former Manchester United teammates to convince him to join Napoli this summer.
McTominay is obviously enjoying life at his new club, Napoli, in Italy, over a year after leaving his boyhood club, United, to join the Serie A powerhouses.
The Scotland international scored 12 goals in 34 league games during his debut season with the Italian team, helping Antonio Conte’s team defeat Inter Milan to win the championship.
His season-long efforts earned him a nomination for the Ballon d’Or and the title of Serie A MVP (Most Valuable Player) for 2024–2025.
It now seems that McTominay is attempting to persuade one of his former teammates to accompany him in moving from Old Trafford to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium by using his influence at both Napoli and United.
Several of the Premier League’s largest teams are still actively planning both incomings and outgoings with one week remaining in the summer transfer window.
United is one of the teams anticipated to be especially busy, looking to offload a number of players before the market ends on September 1.
After acquiring new striker Benjamin Sesko this summer, United is reportedly negotiating a deal to let Rasmus Hojlund to depart the team along with players like Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho.
The Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport claims that Napoli is one of the teams mulling a move for the Denmark international and has asked McTominay to personally call the United striker to persuade him to join.
Together, McTominay and Hojlund made 34 appearances at Old Trafford, including one goal against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League group stage.
A €5 million (£4.3 million) loan arrangement with an obligation to buy for an extra €40 million (£35 million) is reportedly United’s preferred option, indicating that they are open to the move.
Given that Hojlund is also closely associated with Serie A rivals AC Milan, it is unclear if McTominay’s persuasive abilities have been effective.
