The Athletic claims that Morten Hjulmand, a midfielder for Sporting Lisbon, is a target for Manchester United.
With four days remaining in the summer transfer window, the Old Trafford team has apparently identified the Danish international as a possible Carlos Baleba substitute, although they have not yet begun any formal negotiations.
As GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano previously revealed, Brighton was unwilling to sell the 21-year-old midfield player and demanded a price of around £120 million, therefore United withdrew their pursuit of Baleba earlier this month.
The Red Devils have been on the lookout for an alternative since, with both Hjulmand and Crystal Palace starlet Adam Wharton earmarked as potential late solutions.
Man United Eyeing Morten Hjulmand
Romano revealed that Sporting is unlikely to sell any more of its best players this summer due to Viktor Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal, making Hjulmand’s departure in the last days of the summer transfer market challenging.
Having signed Hjulmand from Serie A team Lecce two summers ago, Man United manager Ruben Amorim is familiar with the player and has used him 65 times while he was a member of the Lisbon club.
With 58 league games, six goals, and four assists, the 26-year-old midfielder played a key role in Sporting’s championship runs the previous two seasons.
Following Sebastian Coates’ departure, Hjulmand was named Sporting captain last summer. He has since worn the armband during the first four games of the 2025–26 season.
Journalist Zach Lowy has hailed the Denmark international as a “absolute monster.” He has a deal with Sporting through the summer of 2028.
With Alejandro Garnacho nearing a £40 million move to Chelsea and Rasmus Hojlund anticipated to sign a season-long loan with Serie A winners Napoli, Man United is looking forward to a busy summer finale.
The Red Devils have also been rocked by Kobbie Mainoo’s demand for first-team football, with the England international requesting a loan move before the deadline after being benched for their first two Premier League fixtures.
