‘Triggered me’: United captain’s odd reason for penalty howler

Bruno Fernandes may have missed a penalty for Manchester United in the Premier League due to a referee’s error.

Fernandes tripped over referee Chris Kavanagh, who was attempting to get around the United captain, as he was backing away from the ball in preparation to take the spot kick against Fulham.

After raising his arms in protest, Fernandes returned to the ball and grabbed it up.

Fernandes dropped the ball back down after a few seconds and tried to gather himself before he took the penalty, which he smashed over the crossbar.

At Craven Cottage, that left the score at 0-0 at the interval.

“I was upset. Obviously, as every penalty taker, you have your own routines. You have your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise, and that was what triggered me in that moment,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.

“But that’s not the excuse to missing the penalty. I just had a very bad hit on the ball. I got my foot too (much) under the ball, and that’s why the ball went over the bar.”

United manager Ruben Amorim believed the Portugal midfielder’s performance for the remainder of the match, which ended 1-1, was affected by Fernandes’ conversation with Kavanagh prior to the game restarting after the teams had left for the second half.

Since making his Premier League debut in 2020, he has missed a penalty five times.

“He’s not used to missing a penalty,” Amorim remarked.

“I sensed that he wasn’t feeling very happy during the game, even though he understands how important every moment is in this situation and how it may greatly affect the squad. He has a lot of responsibilities, therefore he is not as involved.

Amorim claimed that his team’s defensive mindset lost them the win, and that after taking the lead, they abandoned their attacking ideals.

Rodrigo Muniz’s own goal gave United the lead, but they gave it up when Emile Smith Rowe, a Fulham replacement, scored 93 seconds after entering the game.

As a result, the visitors only have one point from their first two games.

“After we scored the goal, we lost sight of our play. “We really want to win, and it feels good to score a goal because everyone on the field was thinking, ‘Let’s keep the lead and try to win the game,'” Amorim told the BBC.

“In my opinion, that is the time to push the opposition and have more fun. We left a lot of room and attempted to press the opponent quite hig

As a team, we need to mature significantly. The fact that they put in a lot of effort during the week is what matters most to me. We put in a lot of effort today, and we will get better. Our objective was the moment that altered the course of the game.

Amorim was optimistic about United’s chances in the league even though the team was already five points behind leaders Arsenal at the beginning of the season.

“Winning games is all we desire. “The players are aware that they are competing for a team that requires them to improve,” he stated.

“I am really confident that we are going to get many wins.” – with Reuters
