Alejandro Garnacho is finally set to leave Old Trafford this week after Chelsea’s pursuit of the 21-year-old winger passed a major hurdle in negotiations with Manchester United, according to a report.
Bombed Out of Old Trafford
Following the May Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Garnacho and Ruben Amorim got into a heated argument.
In a post-match interview, the Argentina international, who had started every round before the game in Bilbao, expressed his frustration at being dropped and called United’s season “sh-t.” He also asked about his future at the club.
Finding a new club was Amorim’s unwavering response, and a few days after the final, the Portuguese coach told Garnacho of this choice in an all-team meeting.
Garnacho was then named a member of Amorim’s “bomb squad,” which consisted of Tyrell Malacia, Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Garnacho. These players had no future at Old Trafford and were forced to practice apart from the first team while transfer exits were being arranged.
In an attempt to support this transfer budget with a significant sale, United has been aggressively pursuing Garnacho this summer. However, it seems that his attitude has deterred potential suitors from showing interest.
After doing a comprehensive background check on Garnacho’s character, Chelsea, who made moves to sign the winger in January, are said to have been pleased with their choice.
The 21-year-old, who views Stamford Bridge as a “dream move” and has aggressively rejected offers from other places, shares this desire.
A Difference in Value
The difference in Garnacho’s worth between the two clubs has been the main obstacle to a move to west London.
At first, it was believed that United was holding out for £70 million for a young player who has shown clear skill for his age despite having a difficult time getting a lift in Manchester.
At first, Chelsea gave priority to other targets in the hopes that United would reduce their demands as the transfer window went on, which is exactly what happened.
According to Caught Offside, the two Premier League rivals have a “broad agreement” worth about £50 million, including add-ons.
“CaughtOffside understands that it has taken some time to agree on the fee for Garnacho, with the feeling being that both clubs will now settle on something in the region of a £50m package, add-ons included.
“There are still some details to settle, while Chelsea are also keen to ensure they can sell players to keep in line with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules [PSR].”
Since Garnacho is an academy graduate, United believes that his sale will represent “pure profit” from a PSR standpoint. With several gaps in Amorim’s squad remaining to be filled, this means the Red Devils will see a significant increase in their budget as the transfer market enters its last week.
