Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney says Ruben Amorim has run out of excuses at Old Trafford, just two games into the new season.
After putting on a strong display in their loss to Arsenal last week, United drew against Fulham in a lackluster performance. As a result, Amorim now has a dismal record of only four victories in 28 games versus current Premier League teams, with a win percentage of just 14.5.
Despite taking United to the Europa League final, Amorim struggled to turn around their fortunes and did not want to take over the team in the middle of the previous season.
Rooney’s response when asked if Amorim was the appropriate man for the position was telling. He has spent a lot of money this summer on new forwards, but United seems to be having the same preventable problems as when they finished in 15th place last season.
Wayne Rooney refuses to back Ruben Amorim as the right manager for Manchester United
Rooney stated on his BBC Sport podcast: “The manager has no more excuses this season. He needs to achieve results, and he needs to get them fast, since pressure will start to build in October and November if the outcomes don’t shift significantly.
Rooney responded, “It’s difficult and to sit here and say ‘obviously, 100 per cent’ [he is the right man], I don’t think anyone can do that,” when asked if Amorim’s dismal record gave him any confidence that the Portuguese was the ideal manager for United.
Given what we’ve witnessed since he’s been at the club, I doubt Ruben Amorim would say that himself.
But I think the recruitment has been good in the summer. I still want to see two or three more players. But it’s difficult to say ‘this is going to be our manager for the next five years’ on what we’ve seen.”
Wayne Rooney raises concern he has seen in Manchester United’s first two Premier League fixtures
Despite their lackluster performances and ambitions for the future, United has continued where they left off last season. At Fulham, Emile Smith Rowe sneaked past a static defense to clinch a draw, while Bruno Fernandes was forced to pay for missing a contentious penalty.
Although United was commended for playing well against Arsenal last week, they were unable to stop the Gunners’ lone goal, which came from a corner. Rooney added that United should already be concerned about the ongoing issues.
“With only two games left in the season, we might be moving too quickly because Manchester United attracts a lot more attention,” he stated. “What’s concerning, though, is that we’re seeing things that we saw last season.”
After the international break, United will host Burnley, play rivals Manchester City, and play Grimsby Town in the FA Cup this week.
