Manchester United had a busy transfer deadline day with one interesting permanent departure flying under the radar.
With multiple players departing and one joining, it was Manchester United’s busiest deadline day in years.
In an anticipated move to address the goalkeeping problem, United paid £18.2 million to Royal Antwerp to acquire Senne Lammens.
On deadline day, however, outgoings took the lead.
Jadon Sancho found a club and signed a season-long loan with Aston Villa, while Rasmus Hojlund’s loan move to Napoli and Antony’s permanent transfer to Real Betis were all announced.
In other news, Ethan Ennis went on loan to Fleetwood Town, and another promising player left without being noticed.
Manchester United sell Adam Wharton-esque Zach Baumann
Zach Baumann, an academy midfielder, joining Norwich permanently was one of the most intriguing moves to cross the line, though it was by no means the biggest name departure.
Baumann, who is only eighteen, has already trained with United’s first squad and was frequently rated as one of the team’s most entertaining players at every level.
The Daily Mail made a startling analogy after Baumann even appeared in Ruben Amorim’s first training session.
The report noted that Baumann has been likened to Adam Wharton, the £100 million Crystal Palace star, while evaluating some of United’s best players.
This connection is striking, and anyone who has seen Baumann play will know that the Ukraine U19 international possesses Wharton’s passing, poise, dribbling, and work ethic, all of which combine to create a really dynamic player.
According to BBC Sport, the fee for Baumann is $0, with bonuses and stipulations based on how excellent he becomes. This is a move that United may come to regret.
Permanent exit is excellent for Baumann’s career
Baumann’s transfer to East Anglia will be extremely beneficial to his career, even though it is not ideal for United.
With Sekou Kone, Amir Ibragimov, Tyler Fletcher, Jim Thwaites, Jayce Fitzgerald, and Finley McAllister vying for the same two spots, Baumann had fierce competition at Carrington for U21 minutes.
But Baumann will probably become a star at Norwich, which will lead to more senior football opportunities and more football overall.
Since Baumann is placing a gamble on himself, we can only admire his decision to relocate to Norwich in hopes of a better future for himself apart from United.
United will simply hope that he doesn’t achieve the same success that Wharton has; if he does, it might be embarrassing.
