Manchester United are said to have reached a complete agreement for the transfer of goalkeeper Senne Lammens, as their trouble in the crucial position continues.
After more mistakes in goal for Manchester United a few weeks ago, the Belgian goalie, who now plays for Royal Antwerp FC, became a target.
Along with André Onana, who has a propensity for making blunders in goal for the Red Devils, Altay Bayındır, the rotation keeper, has also made mistakes, notably giving Burnley the equalizer this past weekend (Saturday, September 30).
The two could soon play second fiddle to a new number one in Lammens, who is expected to sign a five-year contract with United soon, despite the club reportedly having been negotiating a deal for some time.
Even though he is only 23, he already has some great career stats and fits the younger age profile of players that Man United’s recruitment department and Ruben Amorim are searching for.
Despite just making his Royal Antwerp debut in November 2023, the former Club Brugge youngster went on to win the Belgian Super Cup with the team and has since made 64 appearances overall.
Emi Martinez, a more seasoned and Premier League-tested option, was also being connected to United; however, the move was reportedly shelved because Aston Villa refused to sign their latest MUFC loanee, Jadon Sancho, on a permanent and possible exchange deal.
Many contend that it might possibly be some INEOS fancy footwork and transfer posturing.
According to experienced statistician and tactical analyst “Statman Dave” O’Brien, Lammens stopped more goals than club legend David de Gea did in his record-breaking 17/18 season, despite facing 20 more shots overall than any other goalkeeper in Europe’s top 10 leagues the previous season.
Some will argue that the numbers speak for themselves if you’re wondering why they pursued him.
In exchange for Lammens’ services, Man United is reportedly paying Antwerp some £18.2 million plus add-ons. The summer acquisition number five has already been seen boarding a private aircraft in Belgium before his travel to Manchester.
Since his club is still in the FA Cup, it is believed that Amorim could keep both Onana and Altay in his larger squad. This is especially true since it is unclear how Lammens would adjust to life in English football.
After appearing to be a reliable backup throughout this year’s preseason tour, some supporters have even been urging that backup Tom Heaton be moved to the starting lineup for the time being. In any case, Lammens’ presence will undoubtedly result in the departure of at least one pair of gloves from Old Trafford, if not now, then in January.
Reds will be both glad and somewhat concerned to hear that academy product Kobbie Mainoo asked to leave on loan before deadline day after questions over his playing time.
