Manchester United have made three signings worth more than £200m, but according to Rio Ferdinand, the biggest difference-maker could arrive on deadline day.
Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha have all had strong performances for Manchester United thus far this season.
However, Man Utd has been at the bottom of many results when it wasn’t warranted due to wide gaps in goal and midfield.
Rio Ferdinand thinks the “wonderful” addition who will make a “huge difference” to the team will arrive on deadline day. It makes sense that United is looking to fill those voids.
Rio Ferdinand raves about Emi Martinez’ potential transfer
At one time, Man Utd appeared to be close to completing Senne Lammens’ transfer, but things quickly altered around the deadline.
After United reopened negotiations for Martinez, personal terms were reached in less than a day, and Unai Emery talked as if he had lost his goalie.
Martinez has already gained Rio Ferdinand’s support after taking the initiative to arrange a transfer to Old Trafford.
By drawing a comparison to a club legend, Ferdinand emphasized the idea that Martinez is a better alternative than Lammens nonetheless.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “If they got Martinez out of Donnarumma, him, or Lammens, I’d be happy with. He’s played in the Premier League. That is huge.
“If they get him, it’s a wonderful signing that will hopefully instil some confidence. When I came to Man Utd, Peter Schmeichel went.
“Then we have [Fabien Barthez], Tim Howard, Roy Carroll, and Tomasz Kuszczak, and no one ever went in there and became ‘The No. 1’.
“Then Edwin van der Sar turns up. If you get a keeper who comes in and settles the whole back four, that just transpires through the team.
“We could see a huge difference. The impact of Van der Sar cannot be underestimated. That’s a solid foundation. So, let’s hope [Martinez is like that].” [Starts near 29.50 mark]
Man Utd are making their most important signing
The four games played so far this season have shown that all the money spent on the three forwards is in vain if the goalie continues to let goals away through individual mistakes.
Between the sticks at Old Trafford, United needs a man with the personality to talk and seize the job.
Lammens has potential, but as Ferdinand mentioned above, United needs a player who can make a difference right away, and Martinez can do just that.
Martinez’s age of 32 isn’t a strong enough reason to pass on signing him because goalkeepers don’t deteriorate like outfielders do.
If anything, it’s just another resemblance to the signing of Edwin van der Sar, who became a club icon after being bought from Fulham at the age of 34.
United are making the most important signing of the summer on deadline day, and as Ferdinand said, he could transform the whole team.
