Manchester United’s stance on whether to part ways with Ruben Amorim has been mentioned before the club’s dismal defeat by Grimsby Town.
Grimsby defeated Premier League powerhouse United in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, causing one of the biggest surprises in the tournament’s history.
Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren gave Grimsby a 2-0 lead going into halftime in front of a crowded Blundell Park.
Amorim added star players Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, and Matthijs de Ligt as the second half got begun.
In an effort to pull United back into the game, players like Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee were also added.
In the 75th minute, Mbeumo gave the visitors some hope with his maiden goal for the team.
Then, in the 88th minute, Harry Maguire headed in from a corner to make it 2-2.
Penalties ensued, and following a protracted shootout, Grimsby advanced to the third round with a 12–11 victory after Mbeumo missed his second attempt.
Having already lost to Arsenal and drawn with Fulham in the Premier League, Amorim has now lost their first three competitive games of the 25–26 season.
Amorim’s future will undoubtedly be questioned going forward because the Red Devils aren’t getting any better.
It was said that Amorim’s job was secure back in May, before to United’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
Regardless of the outcome of the Europa League final, United would remain with Amorim, according to a Times report.
Amorim’s job was ‘under no threat at all’, and it was assumed that he would be the man to manage United in the 25/26 season unless he resigned.
But given United’s humiliation at the start of the 25–26 season, Amorim’s situation might start to deteriorate.
Looking ahead, United will play Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon to return to Premier League action.
