Michael Carrick lined up for shock Manchester United role after Middlesbrough exit

In light of the most recent turmoil at the Old Trafford club, former Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has been linked to a surprise return to Manchester United. After failing to lead Boro to the Championship play-offs, the former England midfielder left the Riverside earlier this summer.

Following a protracted post-season assessment, Carrick resigned as Teesside’s head coach, and Rob Edwards was named the new Boro head coach. Carrick is weighing his options before deciding what to do next and has not yet returned to full-time football employment.

But the pressure on Ruben Amorim has increased since Man United’s devastating Carabao Cup loss to League Two Grimsby Town, with many calling for a change at Old Trafford.

Following a number of managerial changes in recent years, the Premier League club’s leadership is believed to prefer to remain with their current manager. With players like Benjmain Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha joining the Red Devils this summer, they have also made significant investments in the playing group.

They were unable to prevent their team from losing by two goals at Blundell Park on Wednesday night, though, and even after Harry Maguire and Mbeumo tied the score at two, they lost the penalty shootout that followed.

Carrick and Gareth Southgate, another former Middlesbrough manager, are currently positioned as the joint favorites to take over at Old Trafford in the event that a significant change is made.

Carrick and Southgate are 6/1 to take over as Manchester United’s manager, while Mauricio Pochettino and Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner are 9/1, according to the most recent odds from AceOdds.com.

The odds for Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, and French football great Zinedine Zidane are 11/1 and 13/1, respectively.
