Rio Ferdinand has wordless response to fan’s proposed three-man shortlist to replace Ruben Amorim

Manchester United are just three games into the 2025/26 season, and there is already uncertainty surrounding Ruben Amorim’s future.

Ruben Amorim thought that after adding four new players to the team in the summer, performances would improve after Manchester United had a forgettable season the previous season, finishing 15th in the Premier League.

Although it may take some time for those new additions to get used to their surroundings, United’s winless record after three games this season is unacceptable.

Prior to the Red Devils’ humiliating loss to Grimsby Town on penalties in the Carabao Cup second round, the season began with a loss to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Amorim has been questioned about his suitability as United’s head coach after his elimination in the Carabao Cup.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United has been firing managers on a regular basis; however, it is unclear if Amorim will be the next to lose their job at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand reacts to shortlist of Ruben Amorim replacements

After spending more than £200 million on new players, Ineos has placed their trust in Amorim to improve matters during the summer.

Despite the arrival of Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, there hasn’t been much evidence that United has improved from the previous campaign.

With just one point from their first two games against Arsenal and Fulham, United has began the new season. When they play Burnley this weekend, they’ll be trying to get their first three-point haul.

On social media, United supporters have been discussing Amorim’s future, though. Many continue to fully support the manager, while others have proposed possible co-owner replacements for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to take into consideration.

Rio Ferdinand, a former United defender, responded after a fan posted a shortlist of three Premier League-experienced managers, including Eddie Howe, Andoni Iraola, and Kieron McKenna.

Ferdinand chose to respond with a face with a peeking eye emoji instead of using words.

This would suggest that Ferdinand is in disbelief that people are quickly changing their opinions of Amorim rather than giving him time to fix the many issues that exist at United.

What has Sir Jim Ratcliffe said about Amorim?

Ratcliffe steadfastly backed Amorim back in March.

Even though Ineos gave Erik ten Hag a new one-year contract extension prior to the 2024–2025 season, the Dutchman was fired as manager in October, and Ineos chose to replace him with Amorim.

Ratcliffe blamed Amorim’s poor performance last season on the team and the fact that he lacked a preseason to put his preferred tactical approach into practice.

“If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest,” Ratcliffe said. “I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. He’s an excellent manager and I think he will be there for a long time.

“You are beginning to see a glimpse of what Ruben can produce. I think you saw a glimpse of it against Arsenal. How many players against Arsenal on the bench did you recognise? How many have ever worn a Manchester United shirt for [the first team]… as there’s no squad left.

“We are down to the last 10 or 11 men in the squad really, of proper first-team players. Ruben is doing a super job.”

Only time will tell if Ratcliffe changes his mind on Amorim.
